The actress paid cash for all of her chosen gifts. Never did she leave a store without providing her condominium’s address in Overlook, a fancy and uppity part of Pittsburgh where balconies had amazing views of the city, so her purchases could be delivered by the department stores’ menial help.

Once and only once on that shopping spree, because she didn’t like to talk about her fame and acting, she mentioned the A-list actors she had recently worked with. The conversation ended up being brief and to the point, and seemed to die quickly thereafter. Something about a fire breather was mentioned, or maybe she said dragon. I wasn’t listening, but maybe should have since she picked up the tab for a new cashmere sweater I fell in love with.

Snow drifted down and over the city, and I whispered, “The ice storm cometh.”
