Chapter 15

“Stay in there until I tell you to come out,” Gabi said as I went into the bathroom. “I want to iron my outfit.”

“Not even married yet and you’re already ordering me around.”

“Believe it. Now stay there!”

She let me come out eventually, after she’d hidden her outfit away again. We went downstairs to find the dining room luckily catching some sunlight, and hot food and drinks available—thank God for gas. The generator was apparently running the fridges, though who needs fridges in this weather? We sat at a table with Craig, Claire, Ernesto, and Ilsa.

“Well, isn’t this great?” I said, after we summed up the grim situation. “Who doesn’t want their wedding day to start like this?”

“I’m sure everything will be fine now,” Ilsa said. “Nothing else can go wrong, surely?”
