Chapter 11

Carter finally gave up his dinner.

A fresh round of screams rose up as the vampires pulled three more men out of one of the more crowded cells. Carter backed away from the circle of vomit on the cell floor, back into the corner furthest from the commotion. Paul joined him and soon the other men in the cell were there, in front of them, pushing back against them.

At least if they come now, they’ll take the others, Carter thought, then immediately felt guilty for wishing such a thing on his cell mates.

But he needn’t have worried. The vampires took their quarry and left the cells shrouded in a silence such as he’d never known. No-one spoke and many heads were hung as they realised…What? That they wouldn’t ever see those men again? That they were next? Carter turned to Paul and they held each other, comforted each other. Carter rested his head on Paul’s shoulder and closed his eyes
