“Once we get to the rise we can see the lair. We might be able to see what’s happening there,” Harrison explained.
“How much further to the doorway or gateway or whatever it is? I just want to get out of here,” said Carter.
“Over the ridge. Once we get over the ridge we should feel the energy pulse which will direct us to the doorway,” explained Harrison.
The dirt beneath their hands and feet made climbing easier, and so did the clumps of grass; easy to grab hold of. The ridge was small. Carter remembered it from that day long ago when first he’d arrived in this world. There was a sense of déjà vu as he stood looking out over the countryside lying between him and his friends, and the vampires, although the light was fading fast and the details which had been so clear on that first day were now obliterated by long shadows.
“What’s that?” asked Carter, pointing to a spreading dark cloud above the vampire lair. “Don’t say they’ve got the Cloud Maker working again.”
