I waved to him as he backed out of the driveway and watched as he peeled off down the street before returning to the house. My mother had finished the dishes and was wiping the counters down when I walked into the kitchen.

“He’s in love with you, you know,” she said.

“I know.”

“You don’t seem very happy about it.”

“I am happy, but I’m also worried. Eric and I haven’t been seeing each other very long.”

“So what? Sometimes love comes quickly. How long did it take you to fall in love with Clayton?”

“I don’t remember,” I lied.
