His face flushed, and he cleared his throat before changing the subject. “How’s Eric?” he asked.

“Eric’s great. He’s working today.”

“He works at a hotel downtown, right?”

I nodded. “Unfortunately, that means he has to work on the weekends a lot.”

“That’s too bad. You shouldn’t be here alone on the weekends.”

“I manage to keep myself busy. Besides, it’s not like Eric and I live together. He still has his own apartment downtown.”

“Why don’t you ask him to move in with you?”

“I don’t think he’d enjoy living here, especially with his brother next door.”

“They get along, right?”

“For the most part, but it’s still awkward.”

“How so?”

“Ever since Eric and I started seeing each other, I’ve gotten a weird vibe from Gary, that’s his brother who lives next door. Gary’s still friendly, but something has changed. He seems to go out of his way to avoid me now, and when we do see each other, it’s awkward. I feel like he looks at me and thinks about me plowing his little brother.”
