When I took Mark’s call, I immediately asked if everything was okay.
“No, not really,” he said with a dry laugh. “I need to see you. Something happened, and I’d prefer to speak with you about it in person rather than over the phone. Can we meet?”
“Sure,” I said slowly.
Mark certainly had my interest piqued, and I couldn’t figure out what he possibly needed to see me in person to speak about. It had to be something with Darren. Why else would he be so covert? Maybe he wanted to meet to tell me they’d finally thrown in the towel on their relationship. Right. Just in time for me to tell him how things had gone south with Eric.
I asked Mark if he wanted to meet at my place or his, and he declined both locations.
“I know you’re out in Evanston, but can we meet in the city and have a drink? You’ll needa drink after you hear what I have to say, and so will I. Hell, I’ll probably need one beforehand, too.”
