Being with him again like this felt right even if it wasn’t. The Eric lying beside me was the Eric I’d fallen in love with: sweet, loving, funny, a far cry from the violent, delusional man who’d accused me of cheating, harassed my dentist, and had a fistfight with his brother on my front lawn.

“Have you talked to Gary since the fight?”

“Yeah, we talked. He apologized, and I apologized. Then Greg got involved and yelled at both of us for fighting with each other and threatened to tell our parents.” Eric rolled his eyes. “God, it was like I was a kid again.”

“Greg’s worried about you. Both of your brothers are.” I hesitated before admitting, “And so am I.”

Eric turned to me. “I know, and I’m sorry. I don’t want you to worry about me. I just…” His voice trailed off.

“You just what?”

He looked like he was in pain as he quietly said, “I just hate losing you.”
