Chapter 10

“I’m glad you thought of that,” he replied. “I have no idea if the one in the shed still works. Kelly was the only one who did the lawn. The one time I tried, he banned me for life.” I thought I saw a red tint on his cheeks.

I hid a grin. “That’s okay. I’ll work on the yard. Why don’t you get started on stripping the porch? I’ll show you how, and it will give you something to do where you won’t…hurt yourself.” I tried to be as salacious as possible. He saw right through that.

“Okay, I have shit talent for stuff like this. You can say it.” He pouted for a few seconds, then smiled. “I’ll put some music on. Keith Urban okay? I remember you said you liked a lot of stuff, including country.”

“Sure.”

I watched him scamper off. I was happy to see him a little more tranquil since the last time we spoke. I hoped that was an upward trend. The strains of “Hank Don’t Fail Me Now” drifted out of the house as I took the lawnmower from the truck and got down to business.
