Chapter 9

“Lily, right? She is the one that is getting married next year?” Patricia asked while trying to catch the eye of a disdainful-looking waif who appeared to be their server.

“Yes, that’s the one. She and her husband are moving to Seattle after the wedding, which is giving my mother fits. She likes to say she is glad all her girls live on the East Coast so she doesn’t have to worry about figuring out time zones when she calls. She had enough of that when Leonard was in the Army. First, he was in Germany after he got out of boot camp in Texas. Then he ended up at Fort Lewis in Washington State. After he retired, he moved to Indiana and now teaches at Butler.”

“I remember going through the same thing with my mom when David got his commission from Annapolis,” Patricia said. “I think it’s so nice we have so much in common. Both our brothers were in the Armed Forces. We both grew up in Wilmington, you in Delaware, me here in North Carolina.”
