Chapter 5

“Not really.”

Sheldon sat outside at one of the tables with umbrellas while I went inside to get a meatball sub and water. I joined him a few minutes later.

“So what’s up?” I asked. “Everything okay at the shelter?” I unwrapped my sandwich and took a bite.

“Everything’s great. We’ve had great response from subscribers to the upcoming grooming clinic already. People are excited. I am, too.” He had a gorgeous smile.

“That’s good to hear. I don’t suppose that’s why you wanted to see me.”

“No, it’s not.” He cleared his throat. “I wanted to apologize.” I was at a loss.

“What for?”

“I was pushy and made you uncomfortable the other day, and I didn’t mean to.”

“Forget about it. There’s nothing to apologize for. I’m sorry if I made youuncomfortable. I just don’t like to be fussed over.” I ate more of my sub. It was good.

“Why is that?” He sounded curious.

“Way I was born, I guess. Don’t mind me. I can be somewhat mawkish, at times. Though never so far as being lachrymose.”
