Chapter 5

I turned my head to see Pierre looming there, fangs descended and red eyes glowing.

The man scampered off, drink left half-finished on the counter. Val had also moved away to serve another customer.

“What was that about, exactly?” I asked.

Pierre’s fangs had retracted and his eyes were now their normal, mesmerizing green. “You looked a little lost, so I thought I’d help you out.”

I studied him and noted the discomfort of his posture. “Thank you, sir. I should go check the rooms in back.”

I moved through the crowd and soon realized that Pierre was following me closely. What could I say? It was his club.

I went to the janitorial closet to get the cleaning supplies and did my tasks as usual. There was only one unoccupied room, and it was a mess. With Pierre still on my ass, I checked the closets for fresh linen and changed the sheets. I disinfected and wiped down mirrors and furniture, then picked up the trash.

When I was finished, Pierre asked, “Do you enjoy menial tasks?”
