“We’re making your dreams come true. I brought you here so we could find out what the requirements to get your GED are.” Dawson’s smiled, pleased.


For an instant, Raleigh wanted to lean close and kiss Dawson on the lips. He wondered why Dawson was pushing him like this. Raleigh furrowed his brow. “What if I don’t want to?” Terror lanced hot through Raleigh’s guts. Dawson must think Raleigh was a stupid hick or that Raleigh—as he was—wasn’t good enough. Raleigh saw all his planning burst into flames and smolder into ash.


“But you do. I’ve seen the passion on your face when you talk about cars. You’re more than a grease monkey, man.” Dawson gave Raleigh’s bicep a light squeeze.


The warm touch bolstered Raleigh’s courage. Dawson wasn’t judging, he was encouraging, Raleigh realized. He took a deep breath and walked inside.
