Sander knew of money in Toby’s bedroom, under the king-sized bed. A loose floorboard next to the headboard lifted, and two thousand dollars in bills was stashed inside the cubby. Sander got down on his hands and knees, uncovered the cash, and came up smiling.

I tried to push him away, but he kept me locked against him.

“Such a pretty man. A beautiful man.” He tangled a finger in my hair, petted me.
