Chapter 34

I saw the shadow of a dilapidated house with broken windows and boarded up doors that sat on the side of Route 20, did a U-turn, circled back to the structure, and pulled the Caddy into the overgrown driveway.

Another haiku from Lewis entered my memory: boards of haunted walls / destruction of the hell bound / mysterious night.

Just after the Caddy was in park, Sander opened the passenger door, hung his head out, and puked. He made animal-like noises, grunted a few times, spit, and vomited a second time.

The dilapidated building looked as if it had housed a family of four. Colonial-styled with two floors, a span of front porch, and a cobblestone walkway, the thing resembled something half-charred, probably due to a Christmas or holiday fire. A condemned notice hung on the front door from the city of Columbus, warning trespassers to stay away or risk being arrested.
