Chapter 46

Cicadas burst with noise around the cabin, hidden in the trees as I struggled to carry Sander’s body in my arms, walking him to the fraternity brothers’ gravesite. I decided to bury Sander there since the earth was free of rocks and tree roots, easy to work with. My balance wavered to the left and right because of his mass, the epitome of dead weight.

I found Gino at the edge of the woods, face-up, dead. Two bullet holes decorated his chest, close to his heart. A postmortem yellow covered his face and arms. His eyes were wide open, as well as his mouth, which looked as if he were in the process of screaming. Like Sander, blood covered the man’s chest, part of his neck, and hands.
