“Er, there’s not much of that about. Mostly people trade. Usually with rum. Plenty of rum about, courtesy of the redcoats.”

“Rum?” said Collins, frowning. “You gotta be joking.”

There was a dozen more questions about their new home before Jacob had courage enough to ask the question he’d wanted to ask since he left England.

“What’s going to happen to us?”

“Any number of things could happen,” Edward began. “To begin with, any free settler can apply for convict labour. So some of you’ll end up working for free settlers.”

“Doing what? Farm work?” asked one of the men.
