Chapter 26

If Lasra was to be believed, there was less than a day’s walk left to the edge of Alahanai. Solna stuffed his belt pouch full of dried meat and the water skin got tied right next to it. A little bit of luck and a faster pace would have Vius in a healer’s care at Brandris by midday.

Solna moved Vius to sit at the base of their oak. Quickly, Solna cleared their camp as much as possible, then sat in front of his husband. He wished ardently that Vius were able to help him. Solna inched back until Vius’ chest met his back all the way down. Once he had Vius’ arms secure over his shoulders, Solna took his time rolling to his knees, then up to standing hunched over. The position lanced an ached straight down his spine, but it didn’t matter.

West lay beyond their tree. Solna shifted his hands from his husband’s wrists to under his slim thighs and straightened. Midday. He would have Vius in Brandris by midday. A promise.

Vius never woke.
