Leander smiled. “Sir, I am human, not a saint. I have the same needs for companionship as you or anybody else.”

“The complaint says you used your power as the parish rector to lure the man into the relationship. Is that true?”

“No, I believe he informed me once he told his wife he was coming to see me in counseling as an excuse to get out of the house to come see me.”

“And what was your advice when he told you this?”

“I told him to tell her something different, of course, and not use ‘counseling’ with me as an excuse.”

Silence engulfed the small cell for a moment.

“You understand that will be hard to disprove and very easy for the prosecutor to set up,” Weeks said. “When you started this relationship with him, did you consider you might be sitting here one day?”

“Mr. Weeks, I was in an exclusive relationship with another man for eleven years. To be completely honest, no, I didn’t think I’d be sitting here defending myself and my freedom.”
