Chapter 22

“Are you all right?” Charles asked him.

“I’m fine. Just thinking about the past,” he said.

Charles’s eyes widened.

“Thinking about going back and changing things?” Weeks inquired.

“Oh, I don’t think there’s much I would change,” he said.

“Very well,” Weeks said. “Although I still don’t think it’s too late to plead guilty, work out a lesser sentence, and live the rest of your life with the church.”

“I am not changing my mind, sir,” he said, his voice sharp. He noticed Charles’s irritation in his face at Week’s feeble attempt to talk him out of the trial.

“Very well then,” Weeks continued, seeming nonplussed.
