He halted in shock when he entered the kitchen. Dirty dishes sat soaking in the sink. Although they wouldn’t need much scrubbing in the morning, he was still surprised at Dawson’s work ethic. The housekeeper back in London wouldn’t rest at night until her kitchen was spotless. This might be something that he needed to keep his eye on. Mrs. Dawson didn’t live at the parish house, but he thought she ought to clean the kitchen before she left.

He procured the wine and cheese and returned to the upstairs study. Strong waited in the hall for him to return, but took the seat at the piano once they entered. This time, Leander enjoyed the entire piece. The air in the study was warm and sweet in the late spring evening.

“I hope you don’t mind, my playing music in the evenings,” Strong said after he completed the piece.
