Chapter 41

“I bet it feels good to have some food in your stomach.” The nurse gathered his dishes and then started to straighten some of the empty beds.

“Yes, it does actually, Miss…”

“Miss Wardlow.”

“Ah, yes, Miss Wardlow. Listen, I was wondering, can you procure me a Bible?”

Miss Wardlow looked up from the bed she was making. She noticed a book sitting on the table. She took the Bible to him.

“Here you go.” She handed it to him.

“Thank you.”

“Do you need anything else before the physician arrives?”

“No, I think I’m quite well.”

Her footsteps echoed and her uniform rustled as she walked down the long bright ward and through the door.

Leander laid the Bible on his lap and let the pages fall. They settled on Psalm 34. It took a moment, but his eyes focused on the words on the pages.

The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all, he read silently.
