Chapter 52

He entered the office and saw the judge’s clerk serving tea. The judge motioned him in to sit in the chair next to him.

“Mr. Noble, thank you for joining me,” the judge greeted him.

“Thank you for the invitation, sir,” he answered, trying to hide the nervousness in his tone.

“One lump or two? Cream?” Their spoons clanked against the china as they prepared their tea

“Well, I’m sure you’re wondering why I asked you here today,” the judge started again.

“I am a bit curious,” Noble admitted.

“Before we get into that, why don’t you tell me howyou think your case is coming along?”

“It’s going well, sir. The witnesses I called have presented statements regarding the reverend’s character. I don’t think there’s any doubt he’s an unscrupulous man capable of anything.”
