“Objection!” Noble shouted over her. “A proper wife wouldn’t question her husband’s comings and goings, as long as he wasn’t coming home full of drink or wreaking havoc upon his return.”

“I am merely pointing out,” Weeks explained, “that it seems to me Mrs. Shocking knew all along what was going on between her husband and the reverend.”

“Sustained,” the judge ruled.

Weeks took a deep breath and started again. “Mrs. Shocking, did you know all along what was going on between your husband and the reverend?”

“No, I simply assumed they were enjoying each other’s company like most men. I never dreamed they were—”

“Thank you, Mrs. Shocking. Earlier you repeated the message you were given by your uncle after he spotted your husband and the reverend at a London restaurant. What made you suspect there was something more between the two?”

“When I confronted my husband, he didn’t deny it.”
