Chapter 14

“Yep, been for a while. Went to a festival in the town tonight.”

“A festival? I didn’t know you were the festival type.”

“Sure. It was for harvest. Even bought a few things, drank cider.”

Stephen laughed. “Okay. Not my thing, but I’m glad you had a good time. You did, right?”

Rex smiled, thinking of strolling down the street with Jude. “I did. It was a little wrecked at the end. Had to take care of a cat who’d been hit by a car.”

“Wow, is the kitty all right?”

“Yeah, bit banged up. I think he used up two of his nine lives. What’s up, Stevie?”

His brother sighed. Rex couldn’t help but grin. His little brother hated his nickname but no one paid attention and used it anyway.

“Why do you think something’s up?” His brother sounded defensive now.

“You don’t call me out of the blue unless something is.”

Stephen sniffed. “Well, maybe I’m starting.”

“Are you?”

“No. But I could’ve been. It’s not like I don’t love you or anything.”
