Chapter 15

He nodded and opened his mouth, but a squeak came out instead of words. He vaguely heard Nathan speaking words like one-night standandnever happen again.Tugging at the collar of his sweater, which now seemed to be suffocating him, Barnaby backed up. He held up his hands to stop whatever Nathan was saying.

“It’s fine. I’m just going to get out of here.” He turned and walked out of the kitchen and headed for the front door. His hand closed over the knob when he remembered he’d come with Nathan and didn’t have his damn car. He fished his cell phone out of the front pocket of his jeans.

“What are you doing?” Nathan asked, approaching him.

“Calling a cab or something.”

“No.” Nathan shook his head and took Barnaby’s phone out of his hands. He took a deep breath. “I’m-I’m an idiot.”
