I’m next to the door when I hear something that makes me freeze in place. Feeling ashamed, I eavesdrop.
“He got married.”
I don’t know if Sean is laughing or what, but since they’re talking about a man his mother thinks is important her son should know about, I hang back to listen.
“To who?”
“Eleanor.”
“Oh well. Nothing has changed.”
I have no idea who these people are, or why Sean sounds so bitter, but his mother’s answer clarifies a number of things and, at the same time, makes me want to laugh.
“No, you’re right. He’s still the same stupid idiot he was a few years ago.”
Sean laughs, but doesn’t seem as happy as I’d be if I’d heard my mother saying something like that. The most my mother ever says is, Darn!
“Mum, it isn’t about being stupid…”
“No, Sean. Don’t even go there. No. I will never forgive him for making you suffer.”
“Not everybody is like you.”
