Chapter 22

“Don’t you have deputies for this?” asked Dom, feeling bold in front of such an old man. Gordon had to be in his sixties, easily.

“They’re looking for Karen,” said Kiko. The words were flat.

“I’ve also contacted the sheriff,” said Gordon. “We’ll find her, sure enough.”

“What happened?” asked Dom. “Kiko?”

Kiko glanced at the police chief, who gave a slow nod. He apparently didn’t care if Kiko gave a recap to Dom. He pulled up the paper on the pad, perhaps to check over what Kiko had already told him and compare it to what he was about to say.

“When I stopped at the bank earlier today I gave Karen my number. She looked like she knew something.”

“She called,” said Dom. Kiko nodded. Dom suddenly realized Kiko was leaning against the wall and keeping his arms so tightly crossed because he was shaking. Dom rubbed Kiko’s arm, the only comfort he dared give Kiko in front of someone Gordon’s age.
