Chapter 26

“Buddy Bison won’t ever replace Buddy Angus,” said Buddy sadly. “But it’s the thought that counts.”

“Martha was very generous to give you the bison,” said Kiko. Buddy grinned.

“That’s not all she’s generous with.” He took a gulp of beer. “And she’s a damn fine shot. Everyone will have a chance to try to beat her later at the Pumpkin Shoot. Prize is beer, of course.”

“Isn’t it a bit risky to hold the shoot after everything?” asked Kiko.

“It’s fine,” said Buddy. “If anyone tries to so much as point a barrel at anyone, Martha’ll turn them into Swiss cheese.”

Kiko nodded, although privately he was very much hoping that Martha wasn’t somehow involved with everything. Karen hadsaid she’d hired a man…

Buddy was turning back to his bison, shaking his head.

“Ah, Buddy Angus would’ve loved to have a friend like you,” he mumbled at the bison. He sniffled audibly, glanced at his empty beer bottle, and excused himself.

“Still,” said Dom after the brewmeister had left.
