Chapter 29

“Is there anyone you don’t think it is?” he asked, although gently.

“You,” said Dom firmly. He shot Kiko a loaded grin. “Because I want to sleep with you later.”

From up on the deck Buddy’s voice called for an end to the chatter. When everyone apart from a few drunk gigglers fell silent, he continued.

“Let’s get right to it,” he shouted. “This year’s Pumpkin Shoot features the sharpest shooter in all Wisconsin, the lovely Martha Bobo.” He paused for applause and whoops, and Martha took a bow. “The winner of the shoot will get to take home the best prize there is: beer. If you think you can do better than Martha, step right up.”

Amid the chatter and cheers of the crowd a woman stepped up first and crossed the distance to where Martha stood. Dom could see the smug grin on Martha’s face even from this distance. She went first, raised the rifle, and shot once, twice, three times. Beside Dom, Kiko winced and tensed briefly before relaxing.
