Following my lecture, without his son in tow, Matthew Hildebrand made his way up to my desk, stood over me, and asked, “Mr. Avery, may I ask you a frank question?”
I looked up from reviewing a paragraph in the White novel and nodded. “Of course. Please do. I will be honest with my answer.”
Acting nervous, rubbing his left hip through his jeans, Matthew asked, “Are you homosexual?”
I admired both young and old men who asked me such a question instead of talking about me behind my back. Nothing could be worse than being the subject of rumors and ludicrous banter.
I directed all of my attention to the young man and replied, “Yes. I’m homosexual, Matthew.”
“When did you know?”
