“She’s an awesome mom and sees him every other day. We share weekends. And both of us agree to let Colby spend nights where he wants, making his own decisions.”

“You have a son,” I said, shocked, confused, happy for him, and strangely pleased for myself that he didn’t have a boyfriend, lover, or husband.

“I do. Sorry to blow your mind.”

“It’s all right. It’s great. I get it now.”

31: Interview and Battle

Colby Brae presented himself as smart, witty, and very similar to his father. He eyed me from feet to head, cocked his head to the left, and asked, “So you’re the guy my father likes?”

I really wasn’t sure what he had meant but went with it. “Sure. I guess so.”

“Sure is like saying you don’t know. It’s in between things.” He brushed fingers over his left cheek, squinted. “I can’t think that my dad would like a guy who uses the word sure.”
