Chapter 43

The lights in the chamber dimmed, turned red, then began to flash. An alarm began to blare around us. Over its din, Ansel yelled, “You have to push both buttons to stop the cycle. Tylar! Thirty seconds is all we have. Then it starts up again and we can’t stop it a second time.”

Rion lunged for the button but I reached it first, my hand splayed out. The glass shattered easily beneath my palm and I could feel tiny nicks as the broken shards bit into my skin. Nothing major, just a few small scrapes—they’ll heal soon enough. I laid on the button as hard as I could, willed the damn alarm to stop already, open the fucking door and for the love of Christ and all the saints above just stop it with the noise—

The alarm cut off so abruptly, I thought I went deaf.
