Then, without warning, he started in on the hip-hop rap number that replaced Othello’s famous “Rude am I in my speech” bit in the first act. Words dripped like honey from his tongue and, as one, the crowd around him held their breath in awe. Two seconds after he started, Josh dared to pick up the rhythm with a mean beatbox that matched DeMar’s rap perfectly.

Those around Josh fell back, opening a space for him to join in the spotlight. For one heart-stopping moment, he locked eyes with DeMar, sure the other actor would balk at some nobody stepping onto his stage. But there was a fire deep in those charcoal eyes, a simmering delight that fanned into flame when DeMar’s wide mouth turned up at the corners in a welcoming smile. Josh kept beatboxing as DeMar kept rapping, and somewhere between those opening lines and the end of his song, the two became friends.
