I chewed my last bite. “Right behind you.”

Devon and I took a ride through the haunted house, and it gave me an excuse to get closer to him, protecting me from the animatronic monsters and real people dressed in costumes that jumped out of the dark and startled me. Afterward, I objected to riding the roller coasters and water rides. The thought of heights paralyzed me. My knees locked together, and my hands were trembling at the thought. To appease me, Devon offered to ride the children’s teacup ride, a safer option for me.
A few hours later, we sat side by side on a metal bench. “I need to tie my shoe,” he said, bending down and making rabbit ears with his laces. “What do you want to do next?”
I checked my watch. 10:00 P.M. I hadn’t realized I had been away from home for five hours.
“Past your bed time?” Devon winked.
