Chapter 91

“I don’t know, because we’re friends?” Matt asked. “Because you like me—or rather, you like Vic. Because you want me out of your hair as much as I want to get gone. Please?”

Suddenly the wand retreated, and her smile flashed like the sun. “Ah, the magic word!” she crowed. “Please, and thank you, and abracadabra. All right, I’ll help. You need to follow the yellow brick road.”

Matt groaned. “You know, I’ve seen the movie. Let’s cut to the chase, shall we? You give me the ruby slippers, I click my heels three times, and presto! I wake up in my own world before my car is completely totaled.”

Roxie’s eyes went wide. “Give you my shoes? Hell, no! You’re not the kind of guy who can really work a pair of heels, anyway, if you want to know the truth. You have to do it the hard way. Follow the yellow brick road to Emerald City, where you’ll find—”

“The Wizard of Oz?” Matt joked.

Roxie’s smile widened. “You know him? Great, that might make things a bit easier.”
