It only took Noah a second to figure out why when he heard sirens and then saw the flashing lights of fire trucks that were coming down the street toward the now almost burned-out mortuary.
The Seekers quickly headed back to John’s car after agreeing to meet up at the diner, while the others returned to where they’d parked the van. 10
“So that’s it,” John said once everyone was settled in Arik and Rusty’s apartment above the diner. He, Rusty, and Robin were on the sofa. Noah and Ewan leaned side by side against the wall facing them, while Arik paced.
“Pretty much,” Arik replied. “We’ll stick around for a couple more days, just to be certain we haven’t missed one.”
“And then where to?”
“The next small town where there’s an outbreak of what people think is the flu. Sometimes we get lucky and that’s all it is. Other times…” Arik shrugged.
John looked at the team. “Do you ever get tired of all this and just want to settle down and live normal lives?”
