“John. We’re here,” Arik said, breaking into John’s reverie as he stepped onto the rocks at the edge of the falls. “It’s a nice town,” he said quietly.
“It is,” John agreed. “And safe now, thanks to you and the others.” He sat on one of the larger rocks, looking out over his home. “We owe you a lot, although no one knows that except me and Noah.”
“That’s how it’s supposed to be,” Arik said from behind him.
“Do you ever wish you weren’t a Seeker?”
“Sometimes. It’s a lonely life despite the fact I’ve got the others to keep me company. I know there will come a time when they decide to move on and find a life of their own, settle down, maybe meet someone and raise a family.”
“Does that happen often?”
“Often enough. Rusty’s stuck it out. He says he’s in it for the long haul because it gives him something useful to do. Robin and Ewan—it’s hard to tell. They both had personal reasons for joining me, as everyone does. But in time…Well, as I said, they’ll want a life of their own.”
