“What the hell do you mean you’re resigning?” the mayor practically shouted.

“Just what it sounds like, Tom. I’m twenty-seven and I’ve lived my whole life here, other than when I was away at school. It’s time I expanded my horizons.”

“What does Constance think about that? Or have you told her yet?”

“I have and she backs me one hundred percent.” He neglected to mention she was all for his plan—because she thought the idea that he’s found someone to share his life with was the major reason he was leaving with Arik. That was not something the mayor needed to know.

“What are you going to do, then? Look for a job somewhere else?”

“Perhaps, in time. First I’m going to travel. Visit parts of the country I’ve never seen before, which is almost all of it.”

Tom nodded, smiling wistfully. “If I was thirty years younger…”

“You’d have just gotten married and be settling down to raise a family.”
