But they must have taken a wrong turn somewhere because the city was gone, replaced with endless woods that edged closer and closer to the road with every mile they drove, and the only lights illuminating the darkness were the headlights of their own car. They’d seen no one else on the road for the last half hour, and it was getting late. Carlos’s previous ardor seemed to have cooled, and Steven didn’t want to ask if they were lost, but he was really beginning to wonder now.

Staring out the passenger side window, he muttered, “Good. I was hoping this was still Jersey.”

The words, once spoken, were harsher than he intended, and Carlos’s brow creased at them. “We’re almost there,” he replied, chewing on the inside of his cheek. “Just a few more miles and we’ll clear these woods, I just know it.”
