Chapter 20

“Next time, watch where you’re going.”

When Steven rubbed his temple, his fingers came away bloody, and he pulled down the visor to look in the mirror. Blood smeared along his forehead, but when he wiped it off, he couldn’t find a cut anywhere. Must not be mine,he reasoned, but there was a slight knot on his temple, tender to the touch and beginning to bruise, where Carlos must’ve bumped into him as they crashed.

Beside him, Carlos sighed. “I’m so sorry.” His hands shook slightly, and he placed them on the steering wheel to steady himself. “Fuck. I didn’t mean…”

“I know.” Steven placed a hand on Carlos’s shoulder. “Just calm down, hon. We’re fine. Both of us are fine. It could’ve been a lot worse.”

Nodding, Carlos whispered, “Okay. I know.” He glanced out at the road and frowned. “Where do you think that guy went? I didn’t hit him. I know I didn’t…”
