Chapter 24

From the far side of the parking lot, an empty trashcan tumbled noisily to the ground.

Carlos’s hands froze on Steven. “What the hell?”

Turning toward the sound, Steven watched the trashcan roll across the tarmac. Something in the hollow way it bounced along made Steven’s throat dry up. “It’s not windy enough to blow that down,” Steven whispered.

“What?” Carlos asked, tightening his hold on Steven.

“Nothing,” Steven said, shaking his head. “Do you think that guy—”

“There was no guy,” Carlos said.

Steven tried again. “The one we almost hit—”

“I don’t see him,” Carlos said, his voice tense. “We’re alone, okay? You and me. In the middle of fucking nowhere…”

“Then why do I feel as if we’re being watched?” Steven asked softly.
