“She likes to have everybody under her thumb. She’s an over-the-top control freak. I was never a good ‘follower,’ so it was awful growing up. We always butted heads, while my brothers rolled over and did whatever she wanted. There were bodyguards that followed me around everywhere, and whenever I managed to make friends, they didn’t last long. Then I realized I was gay at thirteen, and she found out and tried to purge my homosexual tendencies. Couldn’t have a pervert in the family. Yet another strike against me. And then I turned eighteen, and found out I had a legacy from my paternal grandmother, which was mine to keep. I took it and ran, and I haven’t stopped running.”

“So you volunteer and keep a low profile.” And I almost laughed out loud at the irony that Guff could likely well afford the agency’s fees, should he have had to pay them.
