Chapter 28

Coop went in after I left. His job was to check the rest of the hotel, especially relating to access to the other balconies. We also needed to know escape routes, in case we ran into an unexpected problem that required us getting out of there fast, and not publicly.

Coop got back to our hotel in time for lunch. By then I’d uploaded the photos I’d taken, as well as finding the floor plans we needed on the Annamae’s website. He knocked on my door and when I opened it, I found he was carrying a take-out bag from the fast food restaurant down the street

“I bring good news, and good news,” he said. “I’ve got our lunches, and the balconies are at the ends of hallways.”

“Locked or unlocked?” I asked while he put the bag on the table and took out the burgers and fries.

“Unlocked from nine A.M. until midnight, according to signs on the panic bars.” He smiled with amusement. “Apparently, they don’t think people will try to off themselves until after the witching hour.”
