Chapter 46

“Who did you say you were?” James asked, his voice betraying his fear and suspicions.

“Detective Doyle McCann.” He held his breath waiting for the guy to break the connection. There’d be nothing he could do.

“You weren’t involved in the case two years ago, were you?”

“I am now. The department wants this case solved.”

“That’s not what Detective Kaine told me.”

“What’d he tell you?” Doyle curbed his impatience.

“That the department didn’t care one way or the other and that they’d be just as happy to put the case away unsolved as to solve it. They just wanted it off the radar.”

“I’m afraid he wasn’t right. Maybe he didn’t have all the information at the time. But we do now.” Doyle knew it was a lie and didn’t know what he’d say if the guy wanted to know what the new information was.

“Well, it doesn’t concern me. I can’t help you. I don’t know any more than what I told those detectives, Kaine and somebody. I don’t remember his name.”
