Chapter 42

“Nope, I’ll eat pretty much anything. I’ll be there tomorrow morning. You can count on that, all right?” Considering how often his trust had been broken by Kelly, he likely needed all the reassurances I could give him.

His breath huffed over the phone. “Strangely enough, I know I can. It’s this vibe you give off, so solid and sure. I…well, anyway, thanks and see you in the morning.” He hung up before I could say anything else. Sunday would be interesting.

I arrived at Trenton’s place at seven the next morning. In the early morning light, I could tell that the house and land surrounding it needed a lot of work. It was the shabbiest property in the area. Not a problem, though. I was more than up for the challenge.

Before I could knock on the door, it opened.

“You’re here,” Trenton said, a shy smile on his face.

I smiled back. “I am. Good morning. May I come in?” He stepped back quickly, and I walked past him into the foyer.
