“As I told Spence, my name is unimportant at the moment.” He took a file from the messenger bag slung over his shoulder. “This is for you and Spence.”
Gregg opened it then asked, “How the hell did you get this?”
“Like you, Mr. Rowe, I have friends in the police department.”
“I was told—” Gregg glanced guiltily at Spence, “—that this was missing.”
The man almost smiled. “Now you know why.” He stood, looking at them. “I’ll be in touch again soon, Spence. Until then, enjoy what that contains. Although I’m not sure enjoyis the right word.” With that said, he strode quickly along the back of the plaza, disappearing into the crowd of people pouring out of a movie theater.
“Did he time it to be able to do that?” Spence wondered aloud.
“That or he took advantage of the situation, since he couldn’t have known for certain we’d be early.” Gregg smiled wryly. “Although it was probably a good guess on his part, knowing we’d want to make sure the area was safe.”
