“Then this one.” Mr. North pulled it out part way. “What’s the guy got to do with your story?” he asked Gregg.

“He was one of the witnesses. This is as close as I’ve been able to track him down, so far.”

“Okay. I’ll leave you to it.”

When the manager left, Gregg took the box out to a work bench along one basement wall. Removing half the files, he told Spence, “You go through these, I’ll take the others.” As Gregg started going through his half, he said, “We’re damned lucky he’s letting us do this, considering the personal info he collects.”

“I hope it doesn’t get him in trouble.”

“I doubt it. It’s not like he’s going to tell anyone.”

“I suppose.”

Some twenty minutes later, Gregg said, “Found him. He moved in May twenty-fifth and left two weeks after your folks were killed. Broke the lease. No forwarding address but…” He handed Spence a sheet of paper. “Whoever was managing the place back then was smart. There’s a photocopy of Fowler’s driver’s license.”
