“Since you believe it was stolen, it’s now police property. Don’t worry, I’ll give you a receipt and fill out a form to keep the chain of evidence intact. Do you know who the original owner was?”
“Yes. Hang on.” Spence hurried to his office, returning with a printout of the information he’d found on the website to give her.
“Excellent.” She asked Spence for something to wrap around the book. He got a large shipping envelope from his office and after she carefully inserted the book inside, she put it and the information Spence had given her into her bag then wrote out a receipt. “Now, I can have our people come in to set up a surveillance system.”
“Without it’s being obvious that’s what they’re doing, I hope,” Gregg said.
“I do know my business,” she replied tartly. “I doubt he’s watching the house, but even if he is, all he’ll see is a man from the phone company that Spence called because his land-line is down. You do have one, I hope.”
