Chapter 44

“Tempting fate?” Gregg asked.

“Everything’s over now, so no. Not really.”

“I heard. That’s why I’m here. Are you okay?”

“I think so.” Spence held out his hands. “They’ve stopped shaking.”

If he thought Gregg might hold them and commiserate with him, Spence found out he was sadly mistaken. All Gregg did was nod, ask if Spence needed help with breakfast, and when Spence said “I’m good”, he took out his notebook and began asking questions about what had happened with Mr. Lehmann.

“The good detective didn’t fill you in?” Spence said sourly before giving him a brief recap. While he talked he made the omelets, which he then dished onto plates, setting them on the island.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t here,” Gregg said.

“So you could have gotten the story first hand?”

Gregg frowned. “No. The bastard was going to kill you, Spence. If Detective Dean hadn’t shown up when she did, he might have succeeded. I’d have been here to stop him.”
